While serving in the Confederate Army, Martin had slipped home to see his ill Mother.
unfortunately one of their union neighbors turn him in to the Union Officals. He was sent to the prisoner of war camp at Alton Illinois about 1863.
While there he was involved in several escape attempts.
When the war ended he refused to swear allegiance to the United States & was sentenced to five years
at Gratiot Street Prison in St. Louis Missouri.
In December 1865 his father Angelo Adams Jr., requested Martin's early release because his Mother Mary was very ill & not expected to live. The provost Marshall granted his release in early 1866.

Grave is unmarked. My grandfather (Angelo A. Adams) told me his father was buried next to Jennie Adams' grave on the right side.
