Catherine was born in Pittston, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of Michael O'Hara and Mary Manley. Her father was 74 years old when she was born. She worked as a domestic servant in her teens until her marriage on December 16, 1886 to John Moran. She and her future husband literally lived on opposite sides of the railroad tracks that ran through their town. They had three daughters and four sons, one of whom died at 16 months from diptheria.
