Charles E. Murrill Sr. dead at age 79 Amateur softball star known later in life as avid supporter of youth sports: Newspaper Obituary and Death Notice

Mobile Register (AL) - Friday, August 15, 1997

Deceased Name: Charles E. Murrill Sr. dead at age 79 Amateur softball star known later in life as avid supporter of youth sports

Charles E. Murrill Sr., a Mobile Amateur Softball Hall of Famer, died Wednesday at a local hospital. He was 79.
A lifelong resident of Mobile, Murrill was active with the Mobile Recreational Department, coaching children in all sports at Hannon Park for more than 25 years.
He was a sports standout in his 1938 graduating class at Murphy High School, earning a scholarship to Spring Hill College. He played amateur fast-pitch softball for 18 years, and was a member of the 1944 Delchamps team that went on to become state champions and placed sixth in the nation.
Murrill was inducted in the Amateur Softball Hall of Fame in 1977.
''I lost a good friend, and his wife was a wonderful person,'' said Lewis Brasell, a commissioner of softball in the 1950s and a friend of the Murrill family for more than 70 years. ''If he could have made a living just coaching sports, that would've been what he done. He loved it that much.''
Dr. Philip Gilchrist, a retired ophthalmologist, recently nominated Murrill for the Mobile Sports Hall of Fame. Murrill had coached the doctor's two sons in baseball, football and basketball.
''There's not anybody in the city of Mobile that did more for children,'' said Gilchrist, a friend of Murrill's for more than 40 years. ''That's one of the finest fellows that ever came down this pike. He was so good with those kids. And they just loved him so.''
A veteran of World War II, Murrill served with the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was a member of Little Flower Catholic Church for many years and a member of Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church.
He is survived by his wife, Florence Scheuermann Murrill of Mobile; a son, Chuck Murrill of Wilmer; four daughters, Charlene McLain, Marsha Cumby and Wanda deMattei of Mobile, and Sandra Barnes of Wilmer; two brothers, Jackson Murrill and Paul Murrill, both of Mobile; a sister, Marguerite Duncan of Mobile; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Radney Funeral Home on Dauphin Street. The Rosary will be at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at Little Flower Catholic Church. Burial will be at Pine Crest Cemetery.
