Alfred Lanier Deniston was the son of Thomas Deniston and Sarah Redding, the former a native of Ohio and the latter a native of Virginia. Alfred was the oldest of seven children: Alfred Lanier Deniston, Ezekiel Monroe Deniston, Rebecca Ann Deniston, Clarissa Mason Deniston, Sarah Jane Deniston, Pauline Robinson Deniston and Charlotte Deniston. The family farmed in Preble County, Ohio until moving to Berrien County, Michigan about 1831.

Alfred married Anna West, a native of New York, abt 1846 in Michigan. They were the parents of Frank and Ella Deniston, born in Niles, Berrien County, Michigan. Alfred was a merchant in Berrien County in 1850. The family had moved to Morris City in Grundy County, Illinois by 1860 where Alfred worked as a clerk. A widowed Anna had returned to Niles, Michigan by 1870 and was living with her son-in-law, William Platt and daughter, Ella. Alfred died a few weeks short of his 36th birthday.
