Ethel worked as a landgirl up to the age of 23 years in 1935. She took on domestic duties for a Jewish family in Remuera. She then worked for a Mrs Campbell in Arney Road Remuera. After leaving this postion Ethel moved on to a sewing factory as a machinist but had to leave when she caught measles. Ethel's next employment was in a grocery shop for a Mr Thompson [no relation] in Albert Street, Auckland. This was her last position before she married James Thompson in 1936.
Ethel and Jim had 2 children son Barry and a daughter.
Her later life involved the raising of Barry's 5 children which she performed with total dedication. She was a great homemaker, domestic cook and wife.
When Jim died in 1989 Ethel lived with Barry. Through the 1990s with failing health Ethel resided in a rest home in New Lynn.
When Ethel died in 2002 she had 14 grandchildren and many great grandchildren.
