"Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His godly ones" (Psalm 116:15 NAS).

Johnnie was born in Poplarville, Miss., to the late Charlie and Lula McKissack. She married Lowell Stewart in 1931 in Pearl River County. She was an active member of Union Baptist Church for many years, serving as choir director, Sunday School teacher, WMU president, and Children's Church coordinator, and on numerous committees.

A few years after Lowell's death, she moved to Waco to be near family and help operate a family business. She became an active member of the First Baptist Church Waco, where she met and later, on April 21, 1984, married Snider L. Arledge.

Johnnie and Snider worked as a team with Texas Lay Ministries, Christian Service Corps, and other mission projects in Texas and Wyoming. Johnnie had a heart for missions from young adults years, and she loved her Lord, her family, and her church. She also loved children and ran her own kindergarten for many years. She was a diligent prayer warrior, and her family and friends have felt the power of her intercession prayers on their behalf. Her children "rise up and call her blessed" and she is an inspiration to all who knew her. Johnnie was an extraordinary woman and will be greatly missed by her family and good friends.

Johnnie was preceded in death by husbands, Lowell Stewart and Snider Arledge.
Survivors include her daughters, Joan McIlwain and her husband, William Basil Jr., Patricia Sullivan, of Waco, Mary Ringle and her husband, Alvin, of Waco, and Sandy Thrift and her husband, Howard, of Austin; son, Lonnie Stewart and his wife, Sue, of West Monroe, La.; granddaughter, Carol Elaine Sullivan; grandson, Bradley Stewart Ringle; step-daughters, Karen Clark and her family, and Kathy Wooten; 12 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
