Robert Drane was born July 1854 in Baltimore, Maryland to James and Margaret Drane, immigrants to the United States from Ireland around 1849. He was the fifth of nine children. His father, James, was a shopkeeper.

Robert married Catherine Barry in 1873 and they lived on Lexington Street in Baltimore, later moving to Madison Street. Records indicate they had twelve children but only seven lived to adulthood. Robert was a janitor (fireman) for 30 years with Baltimore public schools.

Robert passed away on September 30, 1907. He was 53 years old.
