Lavina first married Bursitan Alexander Moss (Born 5 Jan 1837) on 26 Mar 1857. He was killed in the Civil War near Chattanooga. They had two children:
*Mary Jane Moss, b. July 7, 1863, m. W. Dempsey Broadhead on April 15, 1880 in Clarke Co., Ms.
*Eliza Ellen Moss, b. May 11, 1865, d. June 22, 1960, buried in Beulah Baptist Church Cemetery, Newton Co., MS. m. 1) John Livingston Spence (1838-1907); 2) and Henry Alexander "Alex" Chaney (1869-1956)
Lavina married James Alexander Mcgrew on 4 Aug 1867, and they had six children. Viney was a midwife and a self-taught nurse who would go anywhere, any time the sick needed her. She rode a horse astride and was not "afraid of the devil himself." Her husband objected to her "comings and goings" so he took all of the unmarried children except for the two youngest sons and moved out in 1886. Lavina became ill with cancer of the uterus and was bedridden for nearly a year. She taught her young sons, 7 and 11, how to cook, spin thread, knit and keep house before she died.
*Susan Charlotte McGrew, b. 7 Jun 1868 in Lauderdale Co., MS; d. 10 Jan 1957 in Claremore, OK, m. John Benjamin Wright, had 9 children.
*Henry Alexander McGrew, b. 22 Apr 1871 in Clarke Co., MS; d. 29 Jul 1943 in Clarke Co., MS., m. Julie Ivy who had two children that took the McGrew name and then had twins before divorcing. He married next Anna Robinson who died in childbirth, he then married her sister, Laura Mae Robinson, and had 5 children.
*Phillip Asbury (Asberry) McGrew, b. 22 Nov 1873 in Clarke Co., MS; d. 12 May 1938 in Clarke Co., MS, m. Ada McMullen and had 5 children & she died; m. Lonie E. Lewis Dew and had 9 children.
*David Eli McGrew, b. 1876 in Clarke Co., MS; m. Anna Bell and had 10 children.
*John William McGrew, b. 14 Aug 1878 in Clarke Co., MS; d. 21 Apr 1947 in Choctaw Co, AL, m. Jemima Grayson and had 9 children.
*James Edward McGrew, b. 22 Oct 1883 in Clarke Co., MS; d. 4 Feb 1965 in Wayne Co., MS, m. Missouri Pearson. They didn't have children of their own, but raised Phillip's child when his first wife, Ada, died soon after giving birth.
