SAN ANGELO - Gwendolyn Gay Brown Scherz was born April 28, 1921, in Robert Lee, Texas, to Paul J. Brown and Opal May (Hope) Bell Brown. After moving with her family to Miles and then to Fort Stockton, Gwen made her home in San Angelo in 1931. She graduated from San Angelo Central High and from San Angelo College, where she was head cheerleader. Gwen continued her education at the University of Texas making the Dean's List and receiving her BBA. While attending the University, she also took extensive courses in Anthropology, which contributed to her lifelong interest in collecting native wood carvings and Pre-Columbian deities from her many travels throughout the world. Following graduation from UT, Gwen married Otto E. Scherz, also from San Angelo. Following her husband's service in World War ll, and his return to Texas A&M to work on his master's degree, the couple settled in San Angelo. Gwen raised two daughters and participated in the life of the San Angelo community. She was active in federated club work, her Sunday School class at the First United Methodist Church, Angelo Community Theater, Girl Scout Leadership, PTA's of Santa Rita Elementary, Lee Junior High and San Angelo Central High, a variety of study groups, Planned Parenthood of Tom Green County, the San Angelo Youth Symphony, Concho Valley Archaeological Society, Shannon Hospital Auxiliary, and most recently, sponsor for the annual Wine and Cheese event of the Chamber Music Series. She also worked for many years as the office manager for Scherz Landscape Company. Gwen's social clubs included the Once a Month Lunch Bunch, the Thursday Club, and the Hoolihan. Gwen Scherz was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 50 years, Otto; her grandson, Michael Collin Burns; her sister, Marjorie Lewis; her brothers-in-law, Arch Lewis Jr., Jake Jarmon and John Banta; sister-in-law Clara Lloyd Scherz; and her loving friend, Cal Hengst Sr. She is survived by her two daughters and their families: daughter Ann Scherz Madison and husband Tom Madison of San Antonio, grandson, T. Phillip Madison and wife Leticia of Baton Rouge, and granddaughter Merriet E.Madison of Austin; daughter Cynthia Gay Scherz Burns and husband Michael T. Burns of Sarasota, and granddaughters Laura Collene Burns and Jillian Elizabeth Burns of Sarasota, Fla. Gwen is also survived by her dear companion and beloved family friend, Dr. Eugene Parker Alexander MD. of San Angelo; her sister, Joyce Jarmon of Corpus Christi; sister-in-law, Lola Mae Scherz Banta of Waco; brother-in-law, Harold Scherz of Austin; 12 nieces and nephews, and numerous great-nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the caring staff at Myrtlewood Estates and Concho Valley Home Health of San Angelo, Patriot Heights Rehabilitation and Care Facility and Vitas both of San Antonio. A special thanks also to Gwen's devoted neighbors, DICK & CORALIE WETZEL. Service is at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 12, at First United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Planned Parenthood of San Angelo or San Angelo Museum of Art.
