(Headline) Was Born Southeast of Jamestown- Brother of Mrs. Elizabeth Reid Jesse Neff received a telegram Monday morning announcing the death at Arkansas City, KS, of his only brother, Col. Elias Neff. The latter had been sick for some time and while the telegram did not state the cause of death, it is believed to have been due to a gunshot wound received during the Civil War and from which he had suffered more or less in recent years.

Col. Neff was born in Hendricks county about one mile southeast of
Jamestown (Boone County). He moved from there to Lebanon and resided
here for about five years. He entered the three months of service at the outbreak of the Civil War and was commissioned lieutenant of Col. I, Tenth IN Regiment. At the expiration of his service he returned home and organized Co. F., Fortieth Indiana Regiment. Both companies mentioned were recruited at Lebanon. After taking the field the second time Mr. Neff was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel of the regiment. He was a brave and efficient soldier and earned distinction on many battlefields. He was in the famous charge up the Missionary Ridge. In that charge four color bearers were shot down one after the other and Col. Neff picked up the fallen colors and himself carried them up the ridge, planting then on top with his own hands.

When the troops started on the Atlanta campaign Col. Neff resigned and
returned to Indiana locating at Indianapolis, where he and his brother William took charge of and managed the old Little Hotel on East Washington street in that city. He subsequently moved to a farm near Traders Point and about twenty-two years ago moved to Arkansas City Kansas, where he had since resided. He had been engaged in farming, stock raising and banking and at the time of his death was quite a wealthy man.

Col. Neff was about seventy years of age. He was married at Crawfordsville to Martha J. Hendrickson, who with one child, a daughter, Miss Aggie, survives him. He also leaves one brother, Jesse Neff, of this city and four sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Ried of Jamestown, Mrs. P. J. Lowery of Indianapolis, Mrs. Martha E. Trotter of Hendricks county and Mrs. Sarah F. Carriger of Indianapolis. - Lebanon Reporter
