Excerpt from the memoirs of Jim E. Lamb, nephew of Vic Perdew:
"My Perdew uncles, Vic, Ralph and Doug, were known for getting into trouble, especially during the Depression Years (1929-1933). They had a fondness for stealing chickens from one farmer, then another, but they did steal the chickens to eat. Their dad, 'Putt', used to say, "My boys are good boys, they just have 'fowl' stomachs, that's all!"
They once talked their brother-in-law, Hubbard Evans, into going along with them one night. They picked an old farmer they knew went to bed early, and was deaf, but they told Hubbard the old man was really mean and kept a shotgun loaded with buckshot. They told Hubbard, "When you grab a chicken, be sure you squeeze it around the neck so it can't make noise." When they each had a chicken and started out of the hen house, the last one, Ralph, threw his chicken against the wall, which made all the chickens start cackling. They all broke and ran across the field. Vic and Doug were holding their chickens by the legs and shaking them so they would cackle louder. Hubbard was running in front of the others, still holding his chicken by the neck. They hollered, "Hubbard, squeeze that chicken's neck, don't let her cackle," to which Hubbard replied, "If this damn chicken is getting any air, it's through her a**!"
Some time later, the three brothers were caught skinning out a yearling calf they found along a road, and were sent to a CCC boy's camp (to house youthful offenders), during the construction of Hwy. 243, up the side of San Jacinto mountains. During their time in the CCC's, two of them, Ralph and Vic, learned to cook and later became chefs as their trade."

The eye is on the pie at the 47th National Orange Show!
The latest creation of Orange Blossom-Orange Empire Room Chef Victor Perdew is the official Orange Show Pie.
Trying for years, Perdew finally hit upon his tasty treat at this year's show.
It was really very easy when I finally got the right ingredients. Pure fresh orange juice, honey and cream. A chef for 36 years, Perdew is now executive chef at the Orange Show Cafeteria, under contract to Edith's Gourmet Service.
"We are really thrilled with this pie," said James and Edith Goldberg, managers of the restaurant. "It's not too tart, nor too sweet. Has that orange flavor in just the right amount."
Chefs in their own right, the Goldbergs have turned the Orange Show restaurant into one of the most sought after spots for everything from cocktail parties to conventions.
Capable of serving up to 6,000 persons in one day, the kitchens of the Orange Blossom and Orange Empire Rooms are the largest outside of the Los Angeles area.
When preparing to serve guests at the National Orange Show or at any other of the functions held there, the Goldbergs estimate the number of people to attend and Chef Perdew orders the food.
Asked how he goes about getting the right amount of food every time, Perdew smiles and answers, "Thirty-six years of experience."

"My uncle, Ferdinand Perdew, and my father, Putnam, ran a produce and meat market at the corner of 3rd and Utah streets in 1863. Among their specialties were mountain sheep and venison.

Perdew's question, where was Utah Street, is a simple one to answer. Utah is today's 'D' Street. The earlier maps of the San Bernardino townsite show the Mormon colonizers originally named the north-south streets Kirkland, Camel, Grafton, Utah, Salt Lake, California, Independence, Nauvoo and Far West. Later the north-south streets were lettered, A to I.
Still later, but on separate occasions, A Street was changed to Sierra Way, B street to Mountain View Avenue, and C Street to Arrowhead Avenue.
The east-west streets of the mile-square townsite were numbered 1st to 10th. Only one east-west street, 1st, was changed. It is today's Rialto Avenue.
