During his line of duty in the Battle of Fredericksburg, Virginia, "by reason of exposure and overexertion in said battle contracted Malarial Poisoning resulting in chronic diarrhoea, chills, and fever."
On 30 March 1864 George was Honorably Discharged at Augusta, Maine.
Certificate of Disability records "George R. Gowen is incapable of performing the duties of a soldier because of disease of the spine - lost the use of his legs entirely, cannot stand or walk without support and assistance due to disease contracted in the line of duty in the
U. S. Service; is totally disabled."
Invalid Pension records "Said disease has constantly plagued him and incapacitated him from working consistently at his trade as a joiner."
