His parents were Anne Ypkes Ypma and Jeltje Anes Fortuin. There is confusion over Jeltje Anes' last name in that there is evidence that she used Snel first and then later when her brother declared his surname in 1812 as Fortuin, she did the same. Her parents had died before a family name was chosen.

Married on 11 Feb 1843 in Barradeel, Friesland, Nthd, to Jetske Jobs Van der Tol. They had 6 children: Maaike 1845-1847, Job 1850-1926, Anne b. 1852 and lived only a short time, Andrew [originally named Anne Marten] 1855-1896 FG 133504038, Marcus 1857-1912 FG 124120997 and Jenny 1859-1948 FG 97002708.

Marten [and wife and 1 child] immigrated to the United States in 1847 on the ship Vesta as the leader and minister of a group of Seceders seeking religious freedom. He was the founder of Vriesland, MI.
