United States Naval Academy Class of 1908.

About 1920, he was awarded the Navy Cross for his actions during World War I:

"LIEUTENANT COMMANDER

RALPH GORDON WALLING

NAVY

For service as set forth in the following:

CITATION:

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Lieutenant Commander Ralph Gordon Walling, United States Navy, for distinguished service in the line of his profession as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. Flusser, engaged in the important, exacting and hazardous duty of patrolling the waters infested with enemy submarines and mines, in escorting and protecting vitally important convoys of troops and supplies through these waters, and in offensive and defensive action, vigorously and unremittingly prosecuted against all forms of enemy naval activity during World War I."


Ralph retired from active duty about 1930. He was recalled to active duty in 1940 and was in charge of the Naval Inspection Office in Erie, PA during World War II.
