EVA SHIMEK Mrs. Eva Shimek Dies Sunday At Her Home In Hemingford HEMINGFORD ----

Mrs. Eva Shimek died Sunday afternoon at her home in Hemingford. She had been ill for a long period. Mrs. Oscar Wanek of Story, Wyo.; and Mrs. Nora Wanek of Lost Springs, Wyo.; two of her daughters, were here caring for her. Other relatives here last week were Mrs. Ralph Lathem and daughter of Crawford, who spent several days at Mrs. Shimek's home. Funeral arrangements were made by the Wildy funeral home. A requiem mass for Mrs. Shimek was held this morning (Tuesday) at St. Bridget's church at 10 o'clock. (Matthew)(Michael) died in Hemingford, Box Butte Co. NE on 9 Feb 1931, he was 66. Buried in Hemingford Cemetery, Hemingford, NE. Religion: Roman Catholic. SHIMEK Mathew Shimek, known as Mike, was born and raised in New Prague, Minnesota. At that place he married Eva Hovorka, daughter of Jacob and Mary Hovorka. Jacob came earlier with the other Hovorkas to homestead, but his family remained in New Prague. They settled southeast of Marsland. Mathew came alone to homestead here. He traveled by train to Omaha. He brought nothing with him, but the Hovorkas helped him to settle. Later his wife, Eva, came with four children, Albina, Emma, John and Jacob. They came by train as far as Omaha and were met farther west somewhere by her father, Jacob Hovorka. Later six more children were born: Wilma, Elnora, Mike, Mary, Rosa, and Albert. Eva Shimek died in 1950, Mike in 1931. They were buried in the Lawn Cemetery. Albina, called Ollie, married Frank Logan. Their children are Floyd, Clyde, Elnora and Francis. Albina and Frank died in Story, Wyoming. Emma married Winfield Keane and lived the rest of her life at Girard, later renamed Nonpareil, Nebraska, where he worked for the railroad and farmed. Their children were: Agnes, Edward, Oscar, Alice, Mike, Elsie, Wilma, John, Emma Rose, Harold, and Winfield. John Shimek married Jennie Safarik. Twins died at birth. John and Jennie live in Los Angeles, California. Jacob married Gertrude Jackson. Their children are Alvie and Evelyn. Jacob died about 1948. Wilma married Clyde Logan who died many years ago. Their children, Alvie and Jack, are living. Wilma lives in Hemingford. Elnora married Joseph Wanek. Neither is now living. Their children are Mildred and Evelyn. Mike married Lillian Godding and they live in Crawford. Their children are Ruth and Marvin. Mary married Michael Walters who live east of Hemingford. Their children are: Edward, Floyd, Alma, Leona, Mary Patricia, and John. Floyd and Mary Patricia are deceased. Rosa married Louis Teansky and lived in Hemingford. Her children are Wilma, Bonnie, and Jerry. Albert is unmarried. Their post office was first at Lawn where the Catholic Church was located. Later it was Marsland. They lived in a sod house with homemade furniture and later a frame house. Their church was the Lawn Catholic Church. For a while they hauled water in a wagon five miles from the Niobrara River. Eva stayed alone with the children on the homestead while Mathew walked to Deadwood to work for the railroad for fifty cents a day. Immigrant Shimeks were primarily farmers. However, various artisans were among the Shimek immigrants. There were organ builders, tailors, cobblers and florists. The Shimeks are typical Bohemians. They are hard workers, dedicated people by and large, law abiding and good Christians, mostly Catholics. MICHAEL SHIMEK DEATH CALL FOR MICHAEL SHIMEK Stroke of Apoplexy is Fatal To Well Known Pioneer of North Hemingford Michael Shimek, pioneer ranchman, passed away at his ranch home southwest of Marsland last Monday night at 10:35 o'clock. He suffered a stroke of apoplexy last Friday and later developed pneumonia. He died without regaining consciousness. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Shimek, who were born in Bohemia and Michael Shimek was born at New Prague, Minn. on March 24, 1864. He was nearing his sixty-seventh birthday at the time of his death. At the age of 21 years he was united in marriage to Miss Eva Hovorka. In the year of 1885 and to this union were born ten children, all of whom are residents of Box Butte county with the exception of one daughter, Mrs. Elnora Wanek, who lives near Lost Springs, Wyo. The other five daughters are Mrs. Wilma Tuchek, Mrs. Emma Keane, Mrs. Olive Logan, Mrs. Mary Walters, Mrs. Rosa Teansky, and four sons, John, Jake, Michael and Albert Shimek. Mike Shimek came from Minnesota and located in Box Butte County in 1886. As a homesteader and one of the very earliest settlers, he became a vital part of the background of this country. He endured the hardship of real pioneering of real pioneering without complaint. The rearing of a large family in a new and undeveloped country calls forth the best characteristics man possesses. They are self denial, patience, and ambition coupled with a strong determination. He was well liked and respected by the neighbors and friends of 45 years acquaintanceship. He was helpful in building the community and likewise a church builder. Funeral services were held at the Catholic Church at Lawn west of Hemingford at 10 o'clock Wednesday morning. Father Manning of Hemingford officiated. He paid a fitting tribute to the pioneer resident of Box Butte county. Interment was in Lawn Cemetery. MICHAEL SHIMEK Mr. Michael Shimek, old settler in Lawn precinct was stricken with paralysis Friday night and on Monday night he passed away. Mr. Shimek leaves a wife and a large family of children, all grown and married, but one. Funeral services were held at the Lawn Catholic church and burial was made in the cemetery.
