Civil War veteran of Company C, 55th Massachusetts Infantry, aka the 55th USCT (U.S. Colored Troops), 1863-1865, along with his older brother Albert T. Felts.

Studied at Wilberforce University in Ohio ca. 1872-1875. Member of the Ohio Conference of the A. M. E. Church.

Married Alice Steward on 31 Dec 1874, sister of Rev. Theophilus G. Steward and William Steward, authors of Gouldtown: A Very Remarkable Settlement of Ancient Date, 1913.

Transferred to the Philadelphia Conference of the A. M. E. Church. Attended the Homeopathic Medical College of Pennsylvania and the Hahnemann Medical College of Philadelphia, graduating ca. 1886.

Later lived in Wilmington, DE, where he is credited with building "the finest church building in the state belonging to the A. M. E. Church."
