Jean A. Bates, 78, of Pine Bluff, died Sunday, April 13, 2008, at Jefferson Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Bates was born July 14, 1929, in Stuttgart, the daughter of the late John Wallworth and Cora Markham Wallworth. She was reared and received her education in Stuttgart, where she graduated from Stuttgart High School.

Jean A. Wallworth married Sam A. Bates on December 18, 1950, in Little Rock.

Mrs. Bates worked for Hutt Building Materials as a secretary and bookkeeper from 1971 until her retirement in 2006.

She was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Bates is survived by three sons, Larry L. Bates and daughter-in-law Trisha of Ft. Smith, Sammy R. Bates and daughter-in-law Jennifer of Cabot, and Richard T. Bates of Dallas, Texas; two brothers, Jerry L. Wallworth of Stuttgart, and Johnny W. Wallworth of Hot Springs; four grandchildren, Justin Bates of Little Rock, Meagan Bates of Ft. Smith, Jessica Bates of Cabot, and Sam Bates of Cabot.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Sam A. Bates, who passed away on January 31, 1993, a son, John Neal Bates, a brother, Jimmy E. Wallworth, and her parents.

Funeral services were held in the Chapel of Ralph Robinson & Son with Reverend James Conn officiating. Interment followed in Graceland Cemetery.
