Chesley Cheek was born in Orange County, NC, the son of Richard Cheek and Jane "Jennie" Andrews. He came to Ashe County, NC, with his family sometime between 1817-1820. They settled in the part of Ashe County that later became Alleghany County. Chesley Cheek married Phebe Woodruff, daughter of Moses Woodruff, Jr., and Sarah Phillips of Surry County, NC, and they had 7 children. Chesley Cheek was shot in the back on Apr. 29, 1864. According to stories passed down in the family, he was killed by Civil War outlaws known as "bushwhackers."
