Graveside services will begin at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 19, in the Dodge Grove Cemetery, Mattoon with the Rev. Carl Lamoreaux officiating. Visitation for family and friends will be held from noon until 1 p.m. Wednesday afternoon at the Schilling Funeral Home, 1301 Charleston Avenue in Mattoon.
Gladys was the daughter of the Rev. and Mrs. A. D. Canary. Gladys was born March 31, 1914 in Wabash, Indiana. She graduated from Neoga High School and Utterbacks Business School. She was the bookkeeper and manager of Burtschi's Book Store in Mattoon for 57 years and retired at the age of 85. She was an active member of the Mattoon Free Methodist Church for over 60 years. Her services to her church included teaching Sunday School Classes, working with youth programs and belonging to the Women's Missionary Society, etc.
She was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers, three sisters, and several nieces and nephews.
Survivors include nieces and nephews, Mary Willingham, Norma Sell and husband Floyd, John Zachow, Larry Zachow, and Joyce Zachow, all of Mattoon, Cindy Karrotki of Springfield, Massachusetts, Roy Lackey of Terre Haute, Indiana, Charles McClay of Bumpass, Virginia, and Patricia Watson of Honolulu, Hawaii. She enjoyed many great nieces and nephews and their extended families.
Her hobbies included traveling, reading, and collecting Hummels and coins. Gladys enjoyed fishing and sharing time with friends and family.
Memorial gifts in her honor are suggested to Mattoon Health Care Center or Free Methodist Church.
