Filomena Bucci-Lombardi, was born on February 2, 1839 in Villa Tucci, Provincia di Chieti, Abruzzo, Italy, a small rural village on the sloping hills above Ortona, on the Adriatic Sea. In about 1872, she married Vincenzo Giovanni Lombardi in Crecchio, another small Italian village which was located just over the hills, directly to the south of Villa Tucci. Over the next 10 years, Vincenzo and Filomena had three children, Rosaria, Lucia and Angelo Nicholas, my grandfather. When Angelo left for America in 1905, he left his mother, wife and two small children in Crecchio with a plan for them to join him once he was settled and employed in New York City. In 1908, at the age of 69, Filomena set sail for New York with Angelo's wife, Nicoletta and their two small children, Marie Filomena and Vincenzo Dominick. The four of them left from the port in Naples, Italy, aboard the SS Principe Di Piemonte, on April 9, 1908. They arrived at Ellis Island in New York Harbor two weeks later on April 24. Filomena lived with Angelo and his family on the upper east side of Manhattan in a six story brownstone building on 118th Street, a few block west of the Harlem River. It certainly must have been a dramatic culture shock for her, after having lived all her life in the small villages of eastern Italy, to find herself now living in the heart of New York City. By 1915, Angelo and his family had settled in El Paso, Texas, where Filomena lived out the remaining years of her life. During her final years, Filomena suffered from Arteriosclerosis and severe Arthritis and was eventually confined to a wheelchair. On Sunday morning, December 9, 1928, Filomena Bucci-Lombardi passed away at her family home on White Oaks Street, as a result of a Cerebral Hemmorhage. Her funeral mass was held the following day at the Guardian Angel Catholic Church and she was laid to rest in the Evergreen Alameda Cemetery in El Paso.
