William Stockton

William was a son of Davis Stockton of Albemarle County, Virginia. He appears to have been born between 1725 and 1730, probably in England. Deed records prove he was married to Jane, her maiden name might have been Marshall. William died in Tennessee between 1796 and 1810, age 66 to 80.

William and his brother Samuel owned a mill near Batesville on Mechum's River in Albemarle County, Virginia. The last mention of William in Albemarle County is a 1767 deed.

William moved from Albemarle County, Virginia, to what is now Rutherford County, North Carolina. On April 10, 1769, he purchased 251 acres on the First Little Broad River. After living in Rutherford County for about 10 years he moved to what is now East Tennessee.

Starting on December 29, 1778, William Stockton is found on several records in what is now Greene County, Tennessee. This area was first known as Washington District of North Carolina, then Washington County, North Carolina, and finally Greene County, Tennessee.

On March 11, 1785, William Stockton and his wife Jane Stockton sold their 289-acre mill site to Phillip Babb. William Stockton's Mill site in Greene County, Tennessee, is now known as Babb's Mill.

Greene County, (present Tennessee)
Wm Whitesides to Wm Wagone 158 acres "oath" Wm Stockton, Aug 1785.

Very little is known about the family of William Stockton. It appears that William and his family moved to the Blount and Knox Counties area and owned a ferry that crossed the Holston (now Tennessee) River between Blount County and Knox County.

On August 28, 1784, Anne Stockton married Micajah Carter in Greene County, (Tennessee). Anne appears to be a daughter of William and Jane (nee Marshall?) Stockton.

Several descendants of William Stockton appear to have removed to Jackson County, Alabama.
