Samuel Puterbaugh , Rev.
Sex: M
Birth: 19 NOV 1833
Death: 8 JAN 1909
Note: Born in OH. Married Elizabeth Miller, 1836.2.23 1897.8.16 on Oct. 19, 1854 Had a farm 7 miles north of Greenville at West Woodington, Greenville Twp., Darke Co., OH. He bought 126 acres on the Township line which is now known as the Coletown-New MadisonLightsville Road. This farm is located in the north west corner of Greenville Township. When he moved to his farm he gave timber out of his woods to build a church beyond Hillgrove. The church had very strict rules. They did not want their congregation to become worldly. The women would sit on one side of the church, the men on the other. All the men would take turns preaching, of course, some were better than others. The leaders were always to start the songs. Samuel knew he could not sing, so he would start and then his wife, Elizabeth, would get him on the correct pitch. If the church thought that you were getting a little worldly, they would church you. Samuel was almost churched several times, but always managed to get out of it. Samuel was a tall, stately man. He always had a tailor in Greenville make his clothes. Nora Husted said the church leaders said he was dressing up too fine. From that day on, he would mix these suits, coat of one, pants of another. They also brought up something about his several span of horses. He never gave them up. (notes by Ester Husted) I remember my grandfather. He liked to ride in our first auto. It was a two cyclinder Maxwell of 1910. He would come to our home in Greenville for a day so he could ride through the country with my father, Dr. Husted, while he was making sick calls. Every fall he would go to Michigan and bring home barrels of apples and some salted fish. . Died Union City, OH. Buried Millers Cem. Palestine, Darke Co., OH (75-1-19)
