Died May 13, 1900 at Rich Gulch, Calaveras Co, CA. Age 61 yrs 4 mo. Farmer. Died from strychnine poisoning. He had been drinking heavily and took a flask that he supposed to contain liquor and took it to the saloon and had it filled with liquor. The flask had earlier had strychnine in it. Married. Pvt., Battery A, 1st Rhode Island Light Artillery, June 1861-June 1864. Civil War record says born Massachusetts, circa January 1840. Calaveras Chronicle May 19, 1900

Possibly husband of Caroline A. Stoetzer Hoey, married 3/29/1888.

His second plague, a military marker, spells his name "Jas."
