STEPHEN WHITED The funeral of Stephen Whited was held from the Grossman Chapel Saturday morning, January 21, 1928, at 10 o'coloc. A brief discourse was given by Rev. J. D. Hampton, pastor of the Argos Christian Church. Duets were rendered by Mrs. Frank Kelly and Mrs. John Cool. The pallbearers were six grandsons:Roderick Whited, Manfred Whited, Gormand Whited, Hal Shipley, Earl Keller, Willard Dimmitt. Interment was made in New Oak Hill cemetery, Plymouth, Ind. Stephen, son of James and Hannah Wilson Whited, was born December 4, 1844, in Starke county, Indiana. He departed this life January 18, 1928, age eighty-three years, one month, and fourteen days. Death, resulted from disease contracted while in the army. Hannah Wilson (his mother) was the daughter of James Wilson, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. While still a youth he moved to Argos, Indiana, where he spent practically his entire life. At the age of sixteen years he enlisted in the Union Army, becoming a member of Co. C. 48th infantry. Mr. Whited was the last of a family of eight children to throw off this mortal co? James and John (twins) sacrificed their lives in the Civil War. He was united in marriage to Mary Jane Gorman. To this union five children were born, Cassie, Effie, Callie, Sadie and John. After the mother's death he was united in marriage to Mrs. Mary Elizabeth (Bushman) Boyer. To this union one son Earl was born. She also preceded her husband in death. In November, 1913, he was united in marriage to Margaret Vaughn. Mr. Whited is survived by the widow, two sons, two sons [repeat] Earl Whited, of Argos, John Whited of Gary; four daughters, Mrs, Geo. Dimmitt of Argos, Mrs. Effie Shipley, Mrs. Callie Smith, Mrs. Reuben Hathaway, all of Plymouth; one step-daughter, Mrs. Elsie Marvin of Springfield, Missouri; one step-son, Ed. Boyer of Gary, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and a host of friends. The deceased was a man of splendid character, enjoying the reputation of a true and loyal citizen of this community. He number his friends by scores and will be sadly missed by those who knew him. And so beside the silent sea I wait the muffled oar; No harm from him can come to me On ocean or on shore.
