Mr. Hugh Allen, 90, died Tuesday (April 4, 2006) at Waycross Health & Rehabilitation following an extended illness.

He was a native of Axson but had resided most of his life in Waycross. He was a son to the late John Lee Allen and Beadie Williams Allen. He was preceded in death by two sons, Hugh Thomas Allen and David Anders Allen; and a step-daughter, Louise Marla Waters Liles. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Adrian E. Allen and Clinton Ray Allen; and three sisters, Vera Phillips, Maxine Walker, and Doris Reeder.

Mr. Allen's father worked for Herbard Cypress Co, on Billy's Island where he also attended a one room school house taught by the beloved and renowned educator Mrs. Myrtle Bankston. He went on to further his education and graduate with honors from law school in Douglas.

He served in the United States Army during World War II in the Rainbow Division of the 77th Infantry in the European Theatre of Operations. He was also the former owner of Allen's Motel on U.S. Hwy. #1.

Mr. Allen later served as Constable and Justice of the Peace in Ware County. He was appointed to office, served, then ran for the office, elected, and sworn in by Naomi Strickland as Justice of the Peace. He served approximately 25 years and resigned. He worked as a security guard for a few years at our local hospital.

He enjoyed fishing and taking short vacation trips until his health declined and resided the last few years of his life in the Waycross Health & Rehabilitation Center.

The survivors include his wife Louise Ammons Allen of Waycross; 7 grandchildren, Kim Allen, Jennifer Allen, Sandi Aldridge (husband Claude), Timmy Thompson Allen (wife Karen), Rodger Thompson Allen, and Timothy Allen all of Waycross, and David Allen of Daytona Beach, FL; 4 great grandchildren, Dalton & Cameron Thompson and Benjamin & Cameron Aldridge of Waycross; two sisters, Vera Grantham of Baxley and Sue Farron; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday (April 6, 2006) at the Music Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Kettle Creek Cemetery. The family will be receiving friends at the funeral home Wednesday evening from 6 until 8 o'clock.
