He received his Bachelor's Degree from Harvard University in 1890 and graduated from Harvard Law School in 1893. He married first to Grace Ewart on July 12, 1899 in Geneva, Switzerland, where her parents were living due to her father's poor health. After Grace's death in July 1902, Wellington married Jeanie Elizabeth Brewer on 8 February 1904 in Washington D.C. Wellington's death date is listed incorrectly as May 23, 1955 in some places, but his death is in the New York Times, issue of April 24, 1954, page 17 and the Springfield Union (see below) and his grave marker confirms the 1954 death year.

OBITUARY: Springfield Union, issue of April 24, 1954, page 29 under Deaths:
Boston, April 23. Wellington Wells, 86, president of the Massachusetts Senate from 1924 to 1928, died today at Massachusetts General Hospital. A graduate of Harvard and Harvard Law School, Wells was elected to the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1919 and to the State Senate a year later. He was Republican floor leader from 1921 until he became Senate president.
