Susan was a daughter of Judge James Archibald Meriwether (1806–1852) and Rebecca Carleton McKinney (1807–1876). She married Jeffereson Adams (1823–1864) on 10 Jun 1847 in Eatonton, GA; they were the parents of eight known children: Susan F. (1848–1926), James (1849–1851), Robert P. (1852–1930), Mary L. (1855–~1949); Irby H. (1857–1912), Sara S. (1859–1940), Ella C. (1860–1951) and Julia (1862–1916) Meriwether.

After the death of Mr. Adams, Susan married Maj. William T. Young (1812–1876) on 11 Oct 1866 in Putnam County, Georgia; they were the parents of three children, William T. Jr. (1867–1891), Wynona C. (1869–1947) and an unnamed infant born and died about 1871.

Susan's daughter Sallie by her first marriage married her step-brother, Robert A. Young, son of Maj. Young and his first wife, Patience W. Jenkins (1829–1865).
