Adam enlisted in the army in 1861 serving in Co K 19th Ind Inf. He reenlisted in Co E 8th Cavalry serving until the end of the war when he enlisted in the regular army serving five years in 147th Infantry.

He married Sarah Ricketts Oct 19, 1872. Their children: Atwood, John, Otto, and James

He was a member of the Christian church, being a good Christian and a faithful member. It was said of him by those who best knew, "He was a loving husband, a good and kind father, a patient sufferer, having suffered for 19 years. Yet through it all was always thoughtful, kind and faithful."
