HENRY A. NEWHOUSE

Henry A. Newhouse, Civil War veteran, departed this life at his home in Lucas, Iowa, on July 25, 1940, at the age of 94 years, 6 months and 25 days.

Only two other Civil War veterans survive in Lucas county. They are Robert Killen and William Humphrey. All three lived in the vicinity of Oakley for many years. Mr. Killen and Mr. Humphrey were both able to attend the last rites for their comrade and friend, which were held at the Methodist church in Oakley on Sunday afternoon at two o'clock. Burial was in the Niswender cemetery.

Henry A. Newhouse was born in Harbke, Germany, on Dec. 29, 1845 and came to the United States when quite young.

At the beginning of the Civil War he enlisted in the Grand Army of the Republic in Hartford, Conn., on August 28, 1862 and was discharged in July, 1863. He was a butcher by trade but followed farming the latter part of his life until he retired and made his home in Lucas.

On September 8, 1872, he was married in Chariton to Regina Kull, whose death occurred on Nov. 26, 1925. To this union three children were born, one of whom, Charles, died in young manhood. Two sons are living, William of Oakley, and Harry, of Des Moines. One grandson also survives him.

On April 17, 1927, Mr. Newhouse was married to Mrs. Clara Jones, whose death occurred on June 18, 1938.

All that loving hands could do did not relieve his sufferings and the precious Saviour reached down and took him to his home of rest. During the closing years of his life he was cared for by his sons and by his step daughter, Mrs. Ethel Pennington.
