"Mrs. Updike, familiarly known as 'Grandma', has left us - but her sweet, quiet, lovable personality remains a rich memory. Her active life was full of helpfulness and sympathy whenever and wherever needed. As strength failed, her sweet face, cheery words, deep gratitude, patience in suffering made the moments spent with her an inspiration. The abiding trust in her loving Savior was her support at all times, even to the very end. Such a Christian life must leave its impress for many years to come."

Widow of the late Elijah Updike, died at 2 o'clock this morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Martha Hopkins. Death was caused by general debility.

Mrs. Updike was born June 15, 1834 in Tompkins county, near Ithaca, N.Y. She came to Illinois with her husband in 1853 and settled on a farm about five miles south of Aurora, where they resided 42 years. After the death of her husband in 1895, Mrs. Updike spent most of her time with her daughter, Martha "Aunt Mattie" Hopkins.

She is survived by three daughters, Martha Caroline Hopkins, Alice Josephine Stolp and Melissa T. W. Albee, all of whom were present when death came. Mrs. Updike is also survived by one daughter in law, Mrs. (Abner G.) Elizabeth Updike and several grandchildren. Her only son, Abner Grover Updike, preceeded her in death.
