John McQuiston was born August 9, 1776, in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. The Deed Records of that county show that he was still in that county, Feb. 26, 1800, for he bought from John Kerr and Ann, his wife, 400 acres of land in Armstrong Township, for 150 pounds, lawful money of the Commonwealth. This land was inherited by Mr. Kerr, Mar. 4, 1806, John McQuiston and Nancy, his wife, of Irvin Township, Venango County, sold the land which they bought from John Kerr and wife to Daniel Harkins. The land is now Armstrong Township in Indiana County, because of its erection [separation] from Westmoreland.

John married May 4, 1802, in Westmoreland County, Nancy Harper who was born Aug. 14, 1784; took up land in Venango County, on a homestead of 444 acres, two miles from Kennerdell Post Office. The land, surveyed May 12, 1802, was near the Allegheny River and south of Big Scrubgrass Creek and was in Irwin Township, and a part of this later became Scrubgrass Township, including John's land.

John who was a carpenter, cabinet-maker, and farmer, gave one-half of his homestead to his brother, Alexander, for going to Venango County to be a neighbor. John was an Elder in Scrubgrass Presbyterian Church and remained on this land all his life. Alexander sold, Aug. 30, 1823, his share to David McKeen – Book D, No. 104, of the Venango Deed Records. The deed says there were supposed to be two equal parts of 175 acres each, be it more or less. Alexander removed to Center Township, Butler County, Pennsylvania.
