J.D. Kanetzky
BORN: October 10, 1924
DIED: May 15, 2012
LOCATION: Georgetown, Texas

J.D. Kanetzky, age 87, of Austin, Texas passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 15, 2012, in Georgetown. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 am on Friday, May 18, 2012, at the Florence City Cemetery, in Florence, Texas. Chaplain Sam Brannon will be officiating.

J.D. was born to Arnhold Cris and Gussie (Ewald) Kanetzky on October 10, 1924, in Austin, Texas. J.D. was an Austin boy and from boyhood he zealously explored his hometown. For a dime, he rode the downtown streetcar over its entire route. On foot, he explored the banks of the Colorado River. Arnhold took his sons fishing and swimming at Tom Miller Dam and they all waited eagerly as Gussie fried up everything they caught. When he was 18 years old, J.D. enlisted into the United States Army, Troop C, 5th Calvary. He served for 3 years as a combat veteran in the Pacific Theater, and was honorably discharged in 1946. On November 11, 2002, J.D. proudly received what Austin High School proudly bestowed: his high school diploma; a gift from the Austin Independent School District to their sons and daughters who cut short their education to begin their military service. After the war, J.D. returned to Austin and became a route salesman for the Hoefghen Company. He dedicated his skills to the beer industry for 37 years, until his retirement in 1984. J.D. considered himself one of the luckiest men alive when he and Freda Zane Isbell exchanged their wedding vows and were married in Lampasas, Texas on August 30, 1947. The northwest Williamson County Isbell home place seemed a long way from downtown Austin in the 1940s. When J.D. drove his parents to meet Freda's family, his mother asked in amazement, "Good Lord Babe, how'd you ever find her?" Until her much-too-early death on May 18, 1985, J.D. and Freda worded hard, doted on their grandchildren, and raised their two sons in a warm and secure home. J.D. coached his sons Little League teams, and after the games hosted barbeques for everyone on both sides, win or lose. He faithfully drove his sons to catechism classes on Saturday mornings, and sat proudly beside Freda as each son took his first communion. J.D. was a life-long Missouri Synod Lutheran, an early-service usher at Redeemer Lutheran Church and encouraged his sons as they served as acolytes. J.D. enjoyed membership in both the VFW and the American Legion. Most everyone feels his or her folks are unique and interesting. J.D.'s family is pretty sure they would not get much of an argument when making that same claim about him.

Serving as pallbearers are nephews and grandsons: Donny Bishop, Bryan Burson, John Randall Isbell, Zane Thomas Kanetzky, Ronny Knight and Tyler Rhea.

Honorary Pallbearer is J.D.'s favorite domino partner, Edwin Young.

J.D. was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Freda; parents, Arnhold Cris and Gussie; his only brother, Harris Harold. Freda's family shared a loving relationship with J.D., and he mourned the loss of each sister and brother-in-law.

He is survived by his only Kanetzky sister-in-law, Lee; sons: Jerry Don and wife Connie, Thomas Chris and wife Nancy; grandchildren: Mariesa, Jennifer, Zane Thomas, Rachel Joy, and Cliff Von; eight great grandchildren: Tyler, Colby, Miles, Carter, Cooper, Morgan and Emma; on May 13, 2009, J.D. joyfully welcomed the next generation of Kanetzky boys, with the birth of Gavin.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living Center, 505 East Lake Drive, Taylor, Texas 76574, or Wesleyan Hospice, 508 Leander Road, Georgetown, Texas 78626.
