Henry Critchfield Passes Away
Another familiar figure of Asotin and pioneer of Asotin county and eastern Washington in the person of Henry Critchfield, passed away Tuesday night, after a rapid decline in health during the past three or four months. At the time of his passing away, he was stopping in the mountains, back of Cloverland, in the hope that the cooler weather and higher altitude might prove beneficial to him, but this was unvailing. The funeral will be held at the family residence at 9:30 o'clock Friday morning, conducted by Rev. J. S. Bell, of the Methodist church, and interment will be made in the Asotin cemetery.
Henry Critchfield was born in Iowa, February 18th, 1855. When only four years of age, with his parents and two brothers, he crossed the plains in 1859, coming to Eastern Washington and settling at Fort Walla Walla, where he continued residence until he was twenty-three years of age, coming to Asotin in January, 1878. While in good health, and for many years, he followed farming on a half section of land about five miles west of Asotin. When his health began to fail him, he disposed of his holdings and came to Asotin, where for the past eighteen or twenty years he has made his residence.
On December 30, 1885, he was united in marriage to Miss Carrie A. Wamsley, and to this union two children were born. He is survived by his widow and one daughter, Mrs. Prentiss Percifull, of Seattle; two half-sisters, Mrs. Maud Long and Mrs. Ida Good, of Rosalia, Washington, and one half brother, Wilbur Critchfield of Starbuck, Wash.
He became identified with the Methodist church about twenty years ago, and was a member of the Asotin Camp of the Woodmen of the World. Earlier in life he was a member of the Order of Odd Fellows, and the Knights of Pythias, but for a number of years living at a distance so it was not convenient to attend the lodge meetings, he dropped out of these latter two organizations. Throughout his career of better than fifty-nine years, he had always lived an honorable life, endeavoring to do unto others as he would have them do unto him; and as he passes away, all people who have known him can have naught but kind remembrances of a good citizen and a good man.
