Lillie Joan Wood Nielsen passed away in peace with her family attending on August 9, 2009.
She is the youngest child of eight, born to John F. Wood and Maude Davenport Wood in Salt Lake City on August 6, 1933.
Joan graduated from West High School. She married Arthur A. Nielsen (Ted) on January 23, 1953. The young couple moved to Payson to begin their family and the city girl had to adjust quickly to farm life.
Joan raised five children and countless others who came and went through her welcome door. There was always a warm hug, a hearty meal, a band aid, or a tissue for a snotty nose or to dry a tear at Joey's house. Joan learned by trial and error to handle the race horses; raise, harvest and can the produce from the garden; drywall and paint the house; nurse the sick; worked as a secretary at Payson Middle School; treasurer for Payson City; and financial secretary for Paul Sorenson, CPA. She was tireless with donations in time and resources to her civic activity and church duty. Her house was spotless and roses carefully attended to. She was immaculate!
Joan is survived by: her husband, Ted; children, John and Margaret Nielsen, (Payson); LuAnn and Bart Wignall, (Payson); David and Deborah Nielsen (Santaquin); Marian Nielsen and Christina Cassidy (Providence, UT); Nancy and JD Zimmerman (Wheatland, CA); 11 grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Virginia Kershaw, Rosemary Waters, a brother Robert Wood. Joan was preceded in death by her parents, brother James Wood, sisters Lucille Rudolph, Elaine Cullen, Alieen Hoesch.
Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, August 13, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. in the Parkview Ward Chapel, 711 South 600 East, Payson, where friends may call on Wednesday from 6:00-8:00 p.m. and on Thursday from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.
Burial will be in the Payson City Cemetery.
