Per History of Johnson County, Kentucky, by C. Mitchell Hall, there is an interesting tradition in the family regarding an experience of Mrs. Preston. Her people lived on George's Creek in Lawrence Co. At times it was necessary to go some distance to find the cows, which was usually done by riding horseback. One evening, when she was a young woman, Mrs. Preston was performing this task. She heard something scream on the hill above her, and soon was aware that it was a panther. The result was that she and the panther had a race for the house, which ended by her fainting and falling from the horse on arriving at the door, and the beast giving up the chase when they approached the house.
