Peter Schildhauer Chilton Times July 18, 1908

A VETERAN DIES - Peter Schildhauer, a Member of Company K, Fourth Wisconsin Cavalry
There was genuine regret throughout the county when it was learned that Peter Schildhauer, one of the pioneers of the town of New Holstein had passed away on Saturday July 11, 1908, at the age of 78 years.
The deceased was born in Schleswig, Germany, in 1830 and remained there until he attained the age of 22 years, working at the cooper's trade. In 1852 he came to this country and located in New Holstein where he followed his trade and also worked at farming. In April 1861 when the late Gen. Harrison C. Hobart organized Company K of the Fourth regiment, Peter Schildhauer was among those who volunteered. He went south with his company and served faithfully until Aug. 2, 1864, when his term expired and he was honorably discharged. He was a brave soldier and his quiet and unassuming ways made him a favorite with his comrades. He was a member of the Jos. B. Reynolds GAR Post of Chilton and although in late years he had been unable to attend the meeting regularly, was always welcomed here when he found it possible to be present.
After his return from the south he was married to Miss Dora Schoen and followed farming until recently when he moved into the village. He was known to young and old of the town and all had the highest respect for him. He was buried on Monday afternoon with military services conducted by the GAR.
He is survived by a widow, one son, Herman, and two daughters, Mrs. Caroline Hansen and Mrs. Hermenia Matzen. Among the pallbearers at his funeral were O. M Sharon and G. A. Johnson, members of his old company.
