Owen and Allie left their native Palmetto, Georgia, and came by train with their 3 children in the early 1920's. They first came to Upthegrove Beach, where Owen's sister, Eliza Upthegrove, and her husband, Rob, lived. During the 1928 hurricane, Owen worked for Bessemer when Port Mayaca Cemetery was established. He brought the first school bus to rural Martin County, an old truck he had converted. He was a member of the Martin County School Board for over 25 years and served for many years as Justice of the Peace in Indiantown. He also owned and operated several gas stations, restaurants, and Hataway Feed Store.
