Joseph Franklin Bilton was born February 23, 1870 in Washington County, Arkansas, son of Benjamin Franklin Bilton (1837-1928) and Mary 'Polly' Nunnley (1846-1918). The 1880 Federal Census for Vineyard, Arkansas (Washington County) shows Joseph Bilton, age 9, born in Arkansas; living with his father B. C. Bilton, age 42, born in Arkansas; and his mother, Mary, age 33; born in Arkansas. Also living in the household was Joseph's siblings: Jackson Bilton, age 15, born in Texas; Samuel Bilton, age 13, born in Texas; Ann Bilton, age 11, born in Arkansas; Thomas Bilton, age 7, born in Arkansas; Edna Bilton, age 5, born in Arkansas; Scott Bilton, age 3, born in Arkansas; and Inea Bilton, age 10 months, born in Arkansas.

On April 9, 1943 in Waxahachie, Texas (Ellis County), Joseph married Mattie Elizabeth Smith who was born December 21, 1884.

The 1920 Federal Census for Caddo, Oklahoma (Bryan County) shows Joseph F. Bilton, a laborer, age 50 born in Arkansas; and his wife, Mattie, age 35, born in Texas. Living with them were five children: Vera L. Bilton, age 14, born in Texas; Leda Bilton, age 10, born in Texas; Lola L. Bilton, age 8, born in Oklahoma; Eva B. Bilton, age 5, born in Oklahoma; and Bobbie P. Bilton, age 2 years 6 months, born in Oklahoma.

Joseph died April 16, 1949 in Caddo, Oklahoma (Bryan County) and was buried in Highland Cemetery in Durant, Oklahoma (Bryan County). Mattie died June 15, 1974 and was buried in Highland Cemetery beside her husband.
