He was the son of Lee Roy and Flossie Mae Garrison Young. He moved, as a child, with his family to Indianola, where he attended school. He was called to active duty with the United States Army during World War II on Oct. 12, 1944. After his basic training, he served in the Asiatic Pacific Campaign, receiving a ribbon with one battle star, then the Southern Philippine Campaign, receiving a battle star. While in the Philippines he was discharged but re-enlisted and was assigned to Fort Hood, Texas with the 2nd Army Division and was sent to auto mechanic school in Atlanta. He received his discharge in December 1946, but again re-enlisted in 1949 and was assigned to the First Infantry Division Motor Pool Headquarters. As a corporal, he was assigned as the personal staff driver for Maj. Gen. John E. Dalquist and when the general was reassigned, he was promoted to staff sergeant overnight so that he could go with the general as his driver. He served the remainder of his duty in Germany, during the Korean War, until his final discharge on Feb. 3, 1953. After his military service, he returned to the McAlester area and married Norma Lee Woody on Dec. 23, 1953, in Krebs. He then received his diploma as a radio and television technician from Oklahoma Agriculture and Mechanical College, now known as Okmulgee Tech. and began working for Leo Roth in McAlester. He and his brothers established Young Brothers Television in McAlester and he later owned and operated Arlie Young TV Sales and Service, until retirement in 1994. During this time he also was very active in farming and ranching. Since retirement, he enjoyed spending time with and caring for his four granddaughters and playing cards with his family and friends. He was a member of the Harrison-Powers Post No. 79, American Legion and the Robert B. Thomas Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1098. He was of the Baptist faith. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Lisa and David Everett, of McAlester, and Karen and Keith Kirby, of McAlester; four granddaughters, Jenna and Jessica Everett, and Kaitlin and Kristin Kirby. Also, a brother and sister-in-law, Marion "Sonny" and Arnita Young, Aguila, Ariz.; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Liz "Sissy" Farquharson, of Hugo, and Pauline and Gwen Engleman, of McAlester, and numerous brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lee Roy and Flossie Young; his wife, Norma Young, on July 11, 1997; an infant son, Kim Randall, in 1955, and three brothers, Carl Young, Roy Young and Charles "Choc" Young. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Bishop Chapel of Memories with the Rev. Bill Nixon officiating. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by Harrison-Powers Post No. 79 American Legion. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Bishop Funeral Service of McAlester. Pallbearers will be Kendall Young, Roy Engleman, Brian Engleman, Terry Cathey, Tim Cathey and Kevin Woody. Honorary pallbearers will be J.D. Case, John Robertson, Bill Wilson, Charlie Harbison, Randy Saunier, Pete Bonicelli, Charles Roberts, Wayne Young, Randy Eller, Robert Young and Gary Martin.
