BLACKWELL — Dr. Donald Eugene Becker of Blackwell died Tuesday morning, April 24, 2007, in Blackwell Regional Hospital. He was 78.

Dr. Donald Eugene Becker was born Aug. 26, 1928, in Wichita, Kan., to Dr. Luther Harrison and Wilda Jeanne Mitchell Becker. He grew up in Blackwell attending Blackwell public schools and Oklahoma Military Academy, graduating in 1946. While in school he attained the honor of Eagle Scout.

He married Ellen Joyce Spurney on Sept. 2, 1950, in Belleville, Kan., and they settled in Lawrence, Kan., where he received his bachelor of science degree from the University of Kansas. They then moved to Kansas City where he attended medical school, graduating in 1954.

Following graduation they moved to Wichita, Kan., where he served his internship. They then moved to San Diego, Calif., where he entered the United States Navy, serving for two years. He spent time as a medical officer aboard the USS Orca, traveling to Japan and India. Following his discharge they returned to Blackwell and he entered medical practice with his father above the old C.R. Anthony building. They later built their own clinic on East Blackwell. He entered a surgical residency for a year in Wichita before re-joining his father in practice.

He was an old fashioned country doctor — making numerous housecalls every night after a long day at the clinic. He also served as company physician for the Blackwell Zinc Company and Acme Foundry and as first deputy county coroner for 15 years. He was a member of the Kay County Medical Society and served as president. He also served as president of the medical staff at Blackwell Regional Hospital and as a member of the Blackwell Board of Education for 10 years.

He was an active member of First United Methodist Church and the Friendship Sunday school c lass and served on various church committees along with singing in the church choir. He loved traveling to the cabin in Minnesota every summer and spending time at the farm. He also enjoyed woodworking, sailing and especially his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce Becker of the home; a son, George Becker and wife Susan of Norman; three daughters, Becky Hutton and husband Dennis of Blackwell, Kathy Becker of Edmond and Susie Graves and husband Chris of Norman; stepmother, Marie Anne Becker of Blackwell; five grandchildren, Aaron Hutton of Dallas, Texas, Laura Hutton of Norman, Mark Graves of Norman, Charlie Graves of Norman and Max Graves of Norman.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Danny Becker; and a sister, Joy Fenton.

The funeral will be 10 a.m. Friday, April 27, in First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Larry Adkisson, pastor officiating and Rollin Vickery with the eulogy. Burial will follow in the Blackwell Cemetery with a flag presentation presented by the Blackwell American Legion and VFW.
