David, the son of John C. Martin and Emily Bates, was born in Coweta County, Georgia.

In 1863, David enlisted in Company K, 1st Georgia Regiment, for six months. At the expiration of that time, he enlisted in the 1st Georgia Calvary and was in many battles.

After the war, David returned to farming. He bought a 240 acre tract of land in Carroll County, built a home and began farming, specializing in raising Irish potatoes and fruit.

In 1869, David married Mary Ann Martin, the daughter of E.B. Martin and Ruth Ann Curtis. Together they had five children: Henry C., Lou, Ida, Mary and Claude. Mary Ann died in 1887 and in 1888, David married Nannie E. Beall Dixon, the widow of Thomas Dixon. and the daughter of Otha Perryman Beall and Eliza Ann Curtis. They had two children.

He and his wives were members of the Methodist Church.
