James Burkett Thomas, 80, of Powell, died peacefully on Wednesday evening, Aug. 5, 2009, at Summit View of Farragut Health Care Center.

He was a longtime member of Powell Presbyterian Church, and had a long industrious career spanning numerous professions including Broadacres Dairy, real estate sales, printing and coal brokerage. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Alma Dean Paisley Thomas; and his parents, James and Eliza Bohannon Thomas.

Survivors include his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Bill and Bettye Paisley; one nephew, William Michael Paisley; one niece and her husband, Karen Paisley and Robert Stone, and their son, Will Stone; special cousins, Roberta Bohannon, Armeda and Ross Schultz and E.B. Jr. and Marjorie Bohannon; one cousin-in-law, Geneva Gearing; his Godchildren, Dan Gearing and Kathy Shepard and her sons, Jake Shepard and John Shepard; other special family members, Eddie Bohannon and Dianne McVey; and very special friends, Judy Wiegel, Margaret Seagraves, Virginia Stoffels, Bill Price, Bob and Deloris McDonald, Jo and Robert Kendrick, Edna Weaks, Kaye Findley, Bobbie Miller, Fran Cox and Charlie and Chris Stringfield.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Rose Mortuary, Mann Heritage Chapel, with the Rev. Craig Hendrix officiating. Graveside services will be 4:30 p.m. Sunday at Thomas Family Cemetery in Athens.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Powell Presbyterian Church, 2910 W. Emory Rd., Powell, TN 37849; American Cancer Society, East Tennessee Region, 871 Weisgarber Rd., Knoxville, TN 37909; or to the Alzheimer's Association, 2200 Sutherland Ave., Suite 102, Knoxville, TN 37919.
