JOHNSON WHITE DIED TUESDAY AFTERNOON:
Was veteran of the Civil War and resident of Franklin for 50 years:
Johnson White, one of the best known and oldest resident of Franklin and a survivor of Wolford's cavalry, famous Ky organization of the Civil War period, died at his home, on West Jefferson Street, about 5 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, after an illness of several weeks. Mr. White had been in failing health for the past five years and for about six weeks had been confined to his bed. Death resulted from several complications brought on by his age and ailments suffered since his service in the Civil War, when he received three wounds and lost the use of his right ear from the explosion of a shell. He had been in critical condition for several days and his death was not unexpected by his many friends and members of the family. Mr. White came to Franklin with his family soon after the close of the war and had made his home here since that time. He was born in Mercer County, KY, Feb. 20, 1842, and was the son of John and Cynthia White. In Sept. 1861, Mr. White enlisted in Company H, First KY Cavalry, which was known as Wolford's Cavalry, and served with the company until the end of the war. He participated in many engagements, receiving three wounds and was a member of the party which pursued Morgan's Raiders through KY and southern Indiana.

Large family survives

He was twice married, the first wife being Miss Nancy Jane Coyle who lived until 1882. Eight children were born of the union. Some time after her death, Mr. White was again united in marriage, this time to Miss Mary Catherine Key, who survives his death. Six children were born to the second union. Surviving with the widow are the following children: Mrs. Lucy Hoover of Connorsville; George White of Vincennes; Mark White of Franklin;James White of Allendale; Ada White of Jeffersonville; Charles White of West Baden; Thomas White of Indianapolis; and Felix White, Nellie White and Andrew White, all of Franklin. Funeral services will be held at the late home, 880 West Jefferson, Thursday afternoon, at two o'clock, followed by ta burial service in Greenlawn Cemetery. Friends are invited to call at the home at any hour. Since early childhood, Mr. White had been a member of the Baptist Church, uniting with the Beech Grove Baptist Church and had lived to win and keep the confidence of his neighbors.
