DEATH CLAIMS A PIONEER RESIDENT.
MRS. MARTHA PEEK passed away Tuesday after four months illness. Mrs. Martha Ellen Peek, long time resident of Appanoose County, passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. James Leonard, Tuesday morning at 1 o'clock, following an illness of four months. Death was attributed to complications of the heart and old age. She was 82 years, 3 months and 18 days old. Mrs. Peek was born in Harrison County, Ind., January 5, 1853. She moved with the family to Appanoose county when 15 years of age and settled near Moulton. The parents of Mrs. Peek were early pioneers of this county, making the trip here in a covered wagon. Mrs. Peek has continuously lived in this community. Shortly after moving to Appanoose county she united with the United Brethern church and continued her membership with this denomination. She was married to Hiram Ely Peek in 1880 and to this union four children were born, one daughter, Mrs. Eva Smith, and the husband preceded her in death. The living are Mrs. James Leonard and Edgar Peek, of near Moulton and Dennis Peek, of Ottumwa, One sister, Mrs. Lum King, also survives her. Three brothers and one sister preceded her in death. There are also seven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren who mourn her loss. Mrs. Peek became ill in January but prior to that time had enjoyed fair health. She had made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Leonard, for the past ten years. She comes from the hardy pioneer stock who faced and surmounted the difficulties of early life. In her passing the family loses a devoted mother and the community one of its oldest residents and a sincere friend to all. Short services were held from the Leonard home, yesterday. The body was taken to Mt. Ararat church where services were conducted by Roy McClure, of Ottumwa. Burial was made at Otterbein Cemetery beside the husband who passed away 36 years ago.
