She was raised and attended schools in Walnut Hill and Centralia, Ill.
She moved to Ardmore in 1959, and worked many years in the Ardmore hospital and as a private duty nurse. Her husband, Howard Downey, who died Aug. 25, 1983, preceded Merle in death.
She moved to Norman in 1990, and was married to William Byrd from June 1991 until his death on Oct. 29, 2002.
She was a member of the First Christian Church in Norman and loved her God and her family.
She had many friends. She enjoyed homemaking. Taking long walks in the morning was her favorite thing to do.
A daughter, Norma Thomison, of Norman, seven grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild, a sister, Wilma Dillon, of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., and a brother, Keith Barton of Hannibal, Mo. survive her.
Preceding her in death are a son, Fred Sanders, who died in 1994, her husbands, three brothers and three sisters.
Memorials may be made to your favorite charity.
A graveside service will be held in Hominy on Monday, Sept. 22, 2008, at 2 p.m.
Services are under the direction of Primrose Funeral Service in Norman.
