While at Shepherd he met his future wife, Virginia Lee Miller and they were married in 1940.
George Whitacre began his teaching career at Woodstock Virginia.
He served as a Military Policeman in WWII.
He resumed his teaching after the war at Front Royal Virginia and then from1946 to 1982 he taught at Martinsburg High School. He also served as a former president of both the Berkeley County Education Associationa and the Classroom Teachers Association. George Whitacre was also active in the Lions Club and was a member of the Methodist Church.
After retiring from teaching, he continued farming and raising cattle.
He was preceded in death by his wife Virginia,his sister Velma Haines and a grandson, John Hefner.
