War Veterans Draw 99-Year Prison Sentences
Savannah, Tennessee, April 12
Two 20 year old World War II veterans, charged with stabbing Elton Shea, Savannah construction worker, to death on the night of March 19, Saturday night were found guilty by a Hardin County jury and given 99 year sentences in prison. The jury picked from a total of 600 prospective jurors, was out 20 minutes. Robert L. Melton, of near Florence, Alabama, and Lee McKelvey of Waterloo, Alabama, showed no emotion when the jury returned the verdict. A new trial and the hearing will be held before Judge Frank L. Johnson of Jackson on April 29. The two youths testified that they stabbed Shea in self defense when they got into an argument following an auto accident in the western part of Hardin County on March 19, 1945. Shea died shortly after he was stabbed. John Shea, who prosecuted the case, was the father of the slain man. Judges were Judge Johnson, David Murray and Judge E.W. Ross of Savannah.
