Well Known Paris Woman Dies Friday
Services For Mrs. Mary McCuistion Will Be Held Saturday Afternoon
Mrs. Mary McCuistion, 85 years old, a resident of Lamar county since 1850, died at 7 o'clock Friday morning at the Sanitarium of Paris, where she had been under medical care since last November.
Surviving her are three sons, and one daughter, Dr. L. P. McCuistion, Dr. W. W. McCuistion and Ed H. McCuistion, and Mrs. Scott R. Galbreath. She also leaves eight grandchildren and six great-grandchilren.
Funeral services will be held at 3 o'clock Saturday afternoon at the house of Mrs. Galbreath in Crockett Circle at Clarksville street, coducted by Rev. Harold G. Cooke, pastor of the First Methodist church, assisted by the Rev. W. T. Whiteside of Greenville, former pastor here. Burial well be at Evergreen cemetery and the pallbearers are to be Morris Fleming, S. L. Bedford, J. M. Caviness and Dr. Scott Hammond, and two grandsons, Regenold McCuistion of Fort Worth Harry McCuistion of Iowa.
Mrs. McCuistion, born in Atala county, Miss., was Mary Abels, daughter of Landon C. and Margaret Abels. She was born June 19, 1847 and came to Lamar county as a child of three years with her windowed mother.
They lived for about two years in the Jennings community and later at Chictoa, and during the war between the states, the family stayed at Tigertown, the brother being called to serve the Confederacy.
Mary Abels was married December 2, 1866 to Harrison McCuistion and seven children were born to them, two dying in infancy and another, Myrtle, at the age of 26. The other four have made their homes here, one son having served the city twelve years as mayor and the other two being prominently identified with the medical profession.
The family lived for many years in the Shady Grove community southeast of Paris, and in 1912, Mr. and Mrs. McCuistion moved to the city to live. Mr. McCuistion died here in 1926.
As a member of one of the older families of the county, Mrs. McCuistion was a member of the Lamar County Historical Society, and her many years affiliated with the Methodist church, was active in its work, both at Shady Grove and after moving to Paris.
