My great grandfather.

Son of Civil War soldier Mansfield Bonnett and Massie Gandee. Direct descendant of Jesse Hughes and cousin to Lewis Wetzel.

Husband of: 1) Adda A. Gibbs, married Dec. 25, 1880; and 2) Mahala Bell Kearns, married Dec. 25, 1885.

Children of William and Adda: Lillian Mae and Mattie Bonnett.

Children of William and Mahala Bell: Mary Bonnett and three infants who died at birth.

Will Bonnett, fireman, was killed when a boiler at the Liverpool Salt Works at Hartford, WV, exploded. According to the front page account given by the Mason Republican, buildings were torn apart and debris scattered over half a mile of territory.

The force of the explosion was heard for miles and nearby homes were shattered and broken with iron debris penetrating the homes and narrowly missing the inhabitants.

The newspaper stated "People from miles around visited the scene of the wreck Sunday, and attended the funeral of the two men who were killed. The evening train was crowded with passengers and the church would not hold the crowds at the funeral." William Bonnett, fireman, and William Smith, engineer, were both killed instantly.

Grandpa Will is buried on a hill directly behind the old Liverpool Salt Works alongside his parents and many Bonnett family members. His death was a devastating blow to his wife and daughters who loved him dearly, and their lives were changed forever.
