The daughter of Jared C. Donelson and Rebecca Stephens Donelson, she grew up with her sister and two brothers near Palmer, Nebraska. She attended college in nearby St. Paul, Nebraska and taught school three years.
Edith was united in marriage to Edwin A. Layher on December 28, 1910 at Palmer, Nebraska. They farmed in Greeley County, Nebraska until they moved to Nampa, Idaho in 1937. She was a bookkeeper for a number of years and retired in 1955 to move to Haddam, Kansas to be near one of their daughters.
"Grandma Layher" as she was fondly called by both family and acquaintances, had a great love for her large garden and many flowers both inside the house and in the yard during the summer. Edith also painted a number of landscape scenes that the family treasures. She saw the beauty in God's creation around her and often remarked what a pretty picture that would make. In her younger days, she loved to write stories and she was called upon often to give readings on special occasions, in the community. She was a avid conversationalist and enjoyed visiting with her family and making friends and had no trouble making friends with strangers. Her Bible and her Church were very important to her. She longed to be with her Lord.
She was preceded in death by her husband Ed Layher, by her parents; by two brothers and one sister; one son-in-law, Clyde Beck, and be one grandson, Stanley Adee; and 1 great-granddaughter, Wendy Linville.
She is survived by her 4 daughters, twins, Mae and her husband Vernon Adee of Haddam, Kansas, and Mrs. Mabelle Beck, Grand Island, Nebraska, formerly of Broken Bow, and also daughters Mrs. Jack (Coila) Linville and husband Jack in Broken Bow, and Viola Layher, Broken Bow; and by eight grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and 12 great-(great)-granchildren, and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services for Mrs. Layher were held at Tibbetts Bros. Chapel in Belleville, Kansas on Thursday morning, Aug 22, 1985 at 10:30 a.m. Then final committal rites and graveside services were held at the Cemetery at Broken Bow, Nebraska at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, August 23, 1985 and interment made there also with the Tibbetts Bros. Funeral Home of Belleville, Kansas in charge of the arrangements.
